On April 2, 2008 Latvia holds a joint meeting between management and specialists of AAS Rossiyskiye zhelezniye dorogi(RZD) and SJSC Latvian Railway management meeting. Latvian Railway will inform RZD representatives about Latvian railway freight capacity on East- West transit corridor in order to harmonize the possibilities of increase of freight traffic and to develop Latvian and Russian railway infrastructure according to these perspectives.
The goal of the meeting is to aware RZD of the fact that Russian side uses only 7 – 30 % of Latvian railway infrastructure capacities for freight traffic on border crossings.
Latvian railway has repeatedly asked Russian railway to estimate the situation and rearrange freight flows, as well as to make necessary investments in railway infrastructure modernization in the territory of Russian Federation. The aim of mutual discussion is to define the potentials of both parties and further goals in order to stimulate the increase of freight traffic.
SJSC Latvian Railway (LDZ) chairman of the board Mr. Ugis Magonis says: “This meeting is the extension of the agreements made during the forum 1520 to fulfill the cooperation of the railways of both countries in order to stimulate freight traffic through Latvian territory and capacity of East- West transit corridor”.
Russian delegation comprises of:
- Igor Blinkov, RZD authorized representative in Estonia;
- Vyacheslav Ruksa, adviser of the president of RZD;
- Jevgeniy Mihailov, manager of RZD department;
- Sergey Molgin, deputy manager of RZD department, and
- Viktor Zukov, AAS TransContainer marketing director.
Latvian delegation is leaded by LDZ chairman of the board Ugis Magonis. Following the previously accepted agenda the representatives of Latvian and Russian railways will discuss the following:
- the issues of joint management of transport corridor Latvia – Russia – Kazakhstan – China;
- cohesion of railway and freight traffic tariffs.
RZD representatives will visit Riga and Ventspils ports as well as other railway infrastructure sites in Latvia.
