Annual Award of the Latvian Railway Established

The representatives of the Latvian Academy of Science, of the State Joint-stock Company Latvijas Dzelzcels and of the Latvian Education Fund at 10 ante meridiem on 23 November of this year at 3, Gogola St. in Riga will festive sign a Cooperation Agreement and a Statute on the establishment of the Annual Award of the Latvian Railway (Annual Award).

In future, the Annual Award will be presented at the anniversary of the foundation of the Latvian Railway that is being marked on 5 August. The Award has been established with the aim of facilitating the development of Latvia’s science and up-to-date technology and their application in engineering and entrepreneurship entailed with the railway industry. 

Annual Award’s nominations:

  • For a distinguished work performance or a lifelong contribution to the Latvian railway transport.
    It is being granted to a distinguished scientist or a practical worker for a lifelong contribution to the development of the Latvian railway transport industry. 
     
  • For research in the Latvian railway transport industry. 
    To be awarded to a young scientist, a Latvian railway specialist for a significant research in the railway transport industry to students for Master of Science or to doctoral students.  

    The Annual Award contains – a medal, diploma and a grant in an amount of 1,500 lats to a scientist or to a practical worker. The Annual Award to a young specialist includes a medal, diploma and a grant in a size of 500 lats. 

    The Annual Award in each nomination is being presented to one person only once in lifetime. The pretenders are being put forward by the representatives of the SJSC Latvijas Dzelzcels, by the members of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, by the councils of the Latvian research institutes, by the senates of the universities and the boards of faculties at least one month before award adjudging. 

    An Annual Award expert commission of seven persons made up by the representatives of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LZA), of the Latvian railway and of the Latvian Education Fund will evaluate the put-forward pretenders. The Expert Commission’s composition:
     

  • The Co-Chairmen of the Expert Commission:
    The Chairman of the Department Physics and Technology (FTZN) LZA 
     The CEO of the SJSC Latvijas Dzelzcels
     The Council Chairman LIF
     
  • Expert Commission’s members:
    two LZA academicians - the candidacies of which are being nominated by FTZN LZA and approved by LZA President and two representatives of the SJSC Latvijas Dzelzcels put forward by CEO.
