Today on 23 October, a honor roll on the given partner status in the European Commission’s project Green Light has been solemnly awarded to Mr Ugis Maagonis, Chairman of the Board of the SJSC Latvijas Dzelzcels (LDZ, Latvian Railway). This status has been awarded to the company for environmentally friendly activities for a reasonable use of electric power.
The reason for receiving of the partner status is the implementation of a lighting technologies’ renovation project in Jelgava and Ventspils. There are high-voltage sodium lamps installed which consume roughly 50% less power and serve almost twice as long. The number of luminaries has been reduced as well and a computerized management system has been installed. The Latvian Railway has economized in both projects 434.5 MWh or 18,858 EUR a year.
The costs of putting into effect were 27,000 EUR in Jelgava and 50,868 EUR in Ventspils. The cover of project expenditure in Jelgava and Ventspils are 2.7 and 5.7 years correspondingly. In Ventspils, there has been the electric lighting network renewed, therefore project cost amount and repayment period had increased.
Additionally to the illuminated station siding sets in Jelgava and Ventspils, such lamps have been installed also in Daugavpils, Skirotava and Rezekne. There have been 50 lamps on average at each set of sidings installed.
An economical use of energy is one of the most important components of the LDZ environmental policy and the implementation of such lighting modernisation projects at LDZ station siding sets started already in 2001 and will go on in future as well.
The Green Light is a voluntary program of the DG TREN of the European Commission. Ekodoma Ltd. is responsible for its implementation in Latvia. The SJSC Latvijas Dzelzcels is the fourth company, which has got the Green Light partner status. The companies Tomo Viesnica, Hotel Laine and Valmieras Piens have obtained this status as well.
Ms Julija Bulgakova, project manager of Ekodoma Ltd, presented the honor roll.
