Through a range of sustainability improvement activities, LDz has achieved a platinum rating in the Sustainability Index and scored well in the UIC RSI

This year, the Group’s companies SJSC “Latvijas dzelzceļš”, LLC “LDZ ritošā sastāva serviss” and LLC “LDZ apsardze”, have jointly managed to achieve the high platinum rating in the Sustainability Index assessment organised by the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability. “LDZ CARGO”, which was rated separately in the index, also achieved platinum this year. The International union of railways (UIC) also increased its assessment of LDZ's performance in achieving the sustainable development goals.

SJSC "Latvijas dzelzceļš" has been participating in the Sustainability Index assessment organised by the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability since 2011, with the Group's subsidiaries joining the index gradually over the following years, performing well each year.

This year, several companies of LDz Group submitted a joint application for the assessment, and SJSC "Latvijas dzelzceļš", participating jointly with LLC “LDZ ritošā sastāva serviss” and LLC “LDZ apsardze”, managed to achieve the high platinum ranking. LCC “LDZ CARGO” also achieved an equally high score in this year’s Sustainability Index.

The Sustainability Index is a strategic management tool based on an internationally recognised methodology. It helps Latvian companies to diagnose the sustainability of their operations and their level of corporate responsibility.

In December 2024, the 2023 performance results of SJSC "Latvijas dzelzceļš" in the Rail Sustainability Index (RSI) of the International union of railways (UIC) were announced.

The Rail Sustainability Index is a rating system and online tool developed for the global rail community to demonstrate the contribution of rail to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals. The selected key performance indicators provide UIC members with a standardised framework for a comparative assessment and sharing good practices.

The results of the index show that in 2023, LDz’s contribution to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals increased compared a year before and exceeded the average performance of railway sector enterprises. Both the platinum rating in the Sustainability Index and the positive result in the UIC Rail Sustainability Index are not coincidental. They have been achieved through a range of sustainability performance improvement activities, including the launch of the calculation of LDz's carbon (CO2) footprint or greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2023. The company has also improved data extraction and processing, allowing the Rail Sustainability Index to reflect the measures taken, such as reporting on the renewable energy consumed in the company's operations. The regulation for internal investment planning was also updated in 2023 to include the EU Taxonomy assessment, which also includes a climate risk assessment for infrastructure projects.
